Beyond Organic Farming
Organic certification is a starting point. We’re taking additional steps to protect ecosystems and strengthen soil health as well as biodiversity.
Integrated supply chains on the ground
Around two-thirds of our products are sourced from integrated supply chains, including our own subsidiaries in Togo and Burkina Faso. Being on site allows us to work hand in hand with family farmers.
Around 40 field agents support those producers in Burkina Faso and Togo through regular farm visits, training, and quality control. They provide practical guidance on organic farming, pruning and yield improvement, while ensuring compliance with organic standards.
This close collaboration creates a bond of trust, which is the guarantee to fairness and genuine quality. Read more about those key employees in this article on our blog.
Dynamic Agroforestry
Since 2021, we have been developing dynamic agroforestry systems adapted to local soils and climate conditions – in Burkina Faso and Togo. By combining cash crops with complementary food crops and tree species, these systems strengthen soil fertility, biodiversity and climate resilience. They also enable year-round harvests and increase farmer income. Read further insights in this blog article.
Research & production support
Improved agricultural production offers the greatest potential to reduce emissions in food supply chains. We therefore invest in improved farming practices, applied research and farmer training – for a total of EUR 399’205 in 2024. This includes support to agroforestry installation, setting up cooperative nurseries, organic certification, organisational development and targeted training – including leadership training for women.
How can you create impact?
Organic certification is a key starting point, but large-scale agricultural transformation requires long-term investment, shared responsibility, and strong partnerships. Together with committed business partners and public entities, gebana co-finances sustainability projects directly within its supply chains to drive lasting impact.
Current projects in Togo
We focus on strengthening sustainable cocoa and pineapple production and cooperative structures. Our activities include:
-
Transition to organic and climate-resilient cocoa farming
-
Installation of dynamic agroforestry systems
-
Establishment of cooperative-based nurseries and farming services (pruning, spraying of organic inputs, weeding) and access to organic inputs
-
Training on good agricultural practices, yield improvement and certification
-
Human rights risk assessment and mitigation within the cocoa value chain
-
Awareness-raising on the importance of school attendance
Current projects in Burkina Faso
We implement circular economy and inclusive solutions that strengthen long-term resilience. Our activities include:
- Scaling dynamic agroforestry in cashew and mango production systems
- Composting and biochar production from agricultural by-products
- Improving soil fertility and reducing waste through circular approaches
- Supporting organic certification and development of farmers cooperatives and mango drying units
- Strengthening women’s participation and leadership in cooperatives
By contributing to these projects, you actively help shape a fairer, more sustainable food system and communicate to your customers about this impact. Read more about the impact you could have by joining gebana’s activites on site.
